Netherlands Heart Institute: excellent science for better care
The Netherlands Heart Institute fosters excellent cardiovascular research on national and international level. We conduct basic science as well as clinical research. We aim to promote cooperation between university medical centres in the Netherlands and between scientists and the private sector.
The Netherlands Heart Institute encourages young, talented researchers and coaches them to the top. We are the platform for the next generation of excellent researchers.
Please contact one of the members of the board if you want to discuss opportunities for cardiovascular science in the Netherlands or abroad: Pieter Doevendans, Dirk Jan Duncker or Jan Weijers.
The Netherlands Heart Institute is a unique cooperation of the cardiology departments of all eight university hospitals in the Netherlands. We cooperate closely with the Netherlands Heart Foundation.

Formerly known as ICIN
ICIN was founded in 1972 by professor Dirk Durrer (1918-1984), who at the time was one of the most prominent cardiologists of the Netherlands and a scientist of global fame. The aim of the cooperation is to share knowledge and means and to create added value both for scientists and for patients with cardiovascular disease. In 1993 ICIN became an institute of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW). ICIN had its roots in clinical research but over the years more basic research has been added to our portfolio. Like in clinical research, cooperation in basic research has proven very valuable.
On 1 January 2016 ICIN became independent of the KNAW and continued its operations under the name Netherlands Heart Institute. KNAW continues to fund our research and conducts the scientific evaluation every 6 years.
